Theater as an invitation to travel

The concept

“Travel is my home”. These words by poet and essayist Muriel Rukeyser inspired the visual identity imagined for the Théâtre de Lorient, Centre dramatique national located in Brittany. We represented the area where the Théâtre de Lorient is located (= the house) and made it interact with insituated seascapes (= the journey). Through quasi-documentary photos, the house and the journey merge and form a unity. The intimate and the familiar mingle with the otherworldly, without distinction. Lorient is anchored in the world, and the world in Lorient.

The form

The lines of the Breton flag and the roundness of the waves are the motifs used to create the logo, the typography and the layout principles. These motifs are modular and infinitely adaptable. The colors of the flag (black and white), sand (beige) and ocean (blue) are the color codes of the graphic charter. The logo combines a sans-serif typeface with a stylized representation of a bird, more rounded in shape, which “carries” the Theatre’s name. The images are constructed like postcards, to convey the idea of a journey. The stone that rises in the seasonal image is a metaphor for the territory, inviting us to take flight.
